FEBRUARY 15, 2018
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Ed Helvey.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Joe Diamond.
Roll call was made with a sign-in sheet. Those present were: John Schmarr, Emma Mirles-Jones, Peg Watkins, Kevin West, Greg Hankins, Julie Houston, John Hartman, Brian Jaffe, William Montague, Andre Washington, C. Joseph Diamond, Mindy Hedges, Indu Rajan, Louise Valentine, Barb Berry, Nancy Cline, Rayna Patton, John Peters, Katherine Kuck, Diane Kabler, Aric Arnett, Tara? Arnett, Don Chenoweth, Marianne Gabel, Caroline Jamison Parker, Jim Nugent, Marya Kolman, Ed Helvey, Carol Young, Donna Sinclair, John Russell, Dave Carpenter, Lee Lybarger, Rand Guebert, Amy White-Predieri, Mark Predieri, Corinne Lyman, Mary Alice Dillman, Cathi Kulik, Linda Gaffey, Rob Richardson, Danny O’ Connor, and one other unreadable name, signature looks like Sm Sp.
Rob Richardson, Democratic candidate for Ohio Treasurer, spoke about his background and hopes for winning the 2018 election. He stated that Ohio is No. 1 in opioid deaths and student debt, and has the 4th highest prison population. He is an attorney and engineer from Cincinnati. His website is www.RobforOhio.com.
Danny O’Connor, Franklin County Recorder; John Russell, farmer; and John Peters, teacher from Newark City Schools, are all candidates for the vacated 12th Congressional District representative, and all spoke about their backgrounds and plans for winning the election.
A motion was made to accept the Secretary’s report by Lee and seconded by Marianne. Motion carried.
A motion was made to accept the Treasurer’s report by Kevin and seconded by Joe. Motion carried. John also explained the 2018 budget, with a vote to accept the budget being delayed until the March meeting so that people can look through it.
John reminded us that we have many events for candidates to participate in: parades, flea markets, etc. and we need chairs to lead and organize these events.
Ed reported that 115 people have turned in paperwork to run for Central Committee in the May primary, the most ever. If you want to run for Central Committee, you can still run as a write-in candidate. The deadline to turn in Form 13 is February 26th at 4:00 p.m.
On February 17th, a fundraiser sponsored by Roger Van Sickle and Ed will be held at Tartan Fields Country Club beginning at 1:00 p.m., which will be attended by Sherrod Brown. Also, a Statewide Candidate Town Hall will be held February 25th at 2:00 p.m. in Marysville at Veterans Memorial. All Statewide candidates are expected to attend. There is also a 12th District Candidate Forum to be held, possibly on March 25th, more details to follow.
Other candidates running are: Aileen Wagner for County Commissioner, Indu Rajan for County Auditor, Louise Valentine for 19th District State Senate, Kathleen Tate for Ohio 68th House, and Cory Hoffman for Ohio 67th House.
The Ohio Legacy Dinner will be held April 13th and the guest speaker will be Eric Holder, who will speak about the PAC that he and President Obama have started about redistricting. We plan to reserve 2 tables for 12 people each and discounted tickets will be $125. It will be held at the Grand Ballroom in the Hyatt downtown.
Ed also reported that 3 longtime Democrats are ill: Pat and Dave Staley (Dave is in hospice care and Pat has cancer) and Margaret Jones is receiving palliative care at home. Ed reminded us of Margaret’s generous donation of her building for many years. Please visit if you can.
Linda reported that we have 94 members at this point.
Peg reported that several local candidates need a treasurer for campaign finance reporting, and several statewide candidates need a county coordinator. Peg thanked Rand and others who helped recruit Central Committee members to run.
There will be meeting of the fundraising committee on 2-22-2018 at HQ, beginning at 7:00 p.m. to plan for fundraisers for this year.
The Communications/Website committee stated that the January newsletter is up on our website, which has been updated to be more user friendly. There is a candidate list on the site and the February newsletter is coming soon.
Cathi reported that the next Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus will be held at ODP HQ on February 19th at 6:30 p.m. Cathi is the county coordinator for Sherrod Brown, so if you would be interested in holding a small fundraiser for him, contact Cathi.
Donna asked that if anyone needs meeting space to please check the calendar on the website to make sure it’s available and she will get tables and chairs set up as needed. If the weather is bad, please check Facebook to verify if the office is open.
The February Chocolate Walk was a big success. 225 people showed up at HQ throughout the event, and Donna thanked all those who helped out.
The next First Friday is in May, and Tanya Bruce will chair the Farmers Market every Saturday, beginning May 26th.
